Barbara Barden opened the meeting with a devotion.
The 2003 Council was introduced. Barbara reviewed the agenda. She read the Church Vision Statement and the Adults Plus Mission Statement. She said that we should keep this in mind as we do our work today.
The Focus this year is on MEMBERSHIP
G What is our membership? What does our Adults Plus membership look like?
Bunch of old people Enjoy good humor Thrifty Energetic Wise
Alive old people Concerned Friendly Travelers Busy
Younger old people Not enough time Unafraid Caring Loving
Mentally alert Experienced Visionary Creative Talented
•> Describe people who are not a part of Adults Plus — a group we are missing.
Members of the Luther Snyder Sunday School class.
People who are still working
People who think they are younger - age perception.
<• Ways to attract new members:
Program preferences to attract new members — promote programs
Need to be intentional
Have someone in Sunday school classes to promote sign up sheets
Sign up sheet for programs has limited description
Put up posters around the church to advertise programs
Introduce some new things
Do not try to be all things for all people
Invite people to come to meetings
~• Membership Directory and Mailing List:
We need intentional ways of defining membership. We should have a Membership Directory to include members of Adults Plus. If someone attends a meeting who is not in the Directory, ask him or her if they want to become a member. The mailing list includes all members of Sunday school classes.
C Define Focus of Adults Plus
1. 55 and older, retired or at home.
2. We should have one representative from each eligible Sunday school class on the Council.
> Barbara called to our attention a packet that she had given us earlier. This included surveys on:
1. Programs (speakers, ideas)
2. Trips (Lots of places we can go, things we can do. Dotty Tobias listed Penn Center)
3. Other (People have said “Could we” “Here is an idea or thought”, etc.)
We then broke up into small groups to discuss the above.
After lunch we met as a group to present Trips, Programs and Other:
> TRIPS:
~gy Pisgah Ranch Metrolina Greenhouse
Arboretum Train Raleigh/State Fair
Trolley Ride and Museum Mt. Airy (Andy Griffith)
Lowes Motor Speedway/Buffet/Concord Mills Biltmore House
Dinner CPCC-Chef Training Class Worthy as the Lamb
June 18 — Trip to Melvin and Anita McIntosh’s
Overnight Williamsburg — early December
Branson, Mo. — 5 days
Barter Theatre
Bedford, Virginia -D Day Memorial
The trips to Melvin and Anita’s, Williamsburg, Barter Theatre, Lowes Motor Speedway, and Train Ride to Raleigh/State Fair were the most popular. It was suggested that Barter Theatre be included with another trip. Trip Coordinators will make definite decisions on trips.

> OTHER
L (a) May is Older Adult Month. After a discussion, it was decided that on Sunday May 4, 2003 from 11:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m. we would sponsor the “Pass it On” Festival. There will be booths where members of Myers Park who are 55 and older will share interests and talents with demonstrations. This will include crafts, hobbies, collections, woodcarving, etc. This will be open to the whole church, including children. It will be free. We will have hamburgers and hot dogs available at a cost. Set up will be Saturday.
(b) The committee will include Bob Grogan, Anita McIntosh, Marie Pearce and Jean Farris. Anyone is welcome-to join this group to help plan. Share your ideas with them.
2. Marie Pearce said that we do not meet in December, but there are people who do not have family around, who do not have a Sunday school class, etc. Are we overlooking them? Should we have some kind of meeting or social in December? There was a discussion regarding this. Barbara said that we would need people willing to take on responsibility to host a group of our people along with others (outreach).
3. We need to appoint a Nominating Committee to be working throughout the year to bring us officers for 2004. This committee should be made up of representatives from each eligible Sunday school class. They should have previously served on Adults Plus Council. We will try this procedure this year on a trial basis. The following were selected to serve on the Nominating Committee this year:
Preston Guiton, Chairman Wesley
John Strother Luther Snyder
Arline Strother Ruth Fisher
Anne Buker Owenby
Bill Walker Fellowship
They will replace all persons rotating off the Council and all persons remaining on council to see if they will continue in the same position or if they would like to take on one of the open positions. They will come on for three years. The Vice-Chairpersons will move up to Chairperson.
The price of meals for Adults Plus program meetings was discussed. It will stay at $4.00 for the present, but may have to be increased soon. It was agreed that the price should be no more than $5.00. It may be necessary to cut the size of the meal.
Ginny Soule requested that everyone bring 3 or more cans of food to the next program meeting. These will be used for the centerpiece.
The outgoing members were thanked for ajob well done.
Barbara said that the Grand Opening would be January 26, 2003.
The next Council meeting will be November 20, 2002.
There being no ftirther business, the meeting was adjourned.
