COMMITTEE REPORTS:
• Programs:
Mabel Doser gave programs as follows:
a. February - Dot and Alex Alvord — Forever Forward, Backward Never
b. March - Helen Turner — Hat Lady - Stories
c. April - John Mason — Dulcimer
d. May - Julian Aidridge
• Trips:
Hubert Wilson gave a list of plays at Barter Theatre, but said it would probably be May before he could plan a trip. He is working on a one-day trip in March. Members made suggestions. Ideas were given for longer trips, including Williamsburg at Christmas, Savannah and Charleston, Branson, Mo. (probably too long), etc. He will check these out.
• Missions
and Ministry: -
Bob Grogan said that $940.00 was collected last year for Lakota Indians. They collected $175.00 today. He was disappointed with the health packets. It was agreed that a goal of 100 would be set. People would be asked to bring items to meetings, and the Council would assemble.
• Publicity:
Lee Morris felt that we had a good promotion for today’s program. He has ideas for enhancement for future programs. There were three things he wanted to mention:
a. Someone had mentioned that we should have poster boards. It would be necessary to have volunteers with artistic talent. It was agreed that we could use other ideas that would be just as effective, such as flyers and newsletters.
h. Should we open Adults Plus meetings beyond membership and people we know? We discussed inviting members of retirement centers. It was agreed that Aldersgate and Sharon Towers would be contacted to determine if there is an interest. Flyers could be sent each month to see if members would like to come to our program. It is possible that a bus could be sent from the retirement centers for these meetings. There might be a problem with reservations. They could come and not eat. Jean Farris will check with Aldersgate and Lee Morris with Sharon Towers.
c. We could send information to the Editor of the religious news page in Charlotte Observer Neighbors (Wednesday edition). However, we do not know who will show up. It was decided that we not do this.
Newsletter - Reports should be sent in by committees to Nancy Holmes in the office. The next newsletter will go out March 1~. Material should be in by the 3rd week in February. Lee Morris will come by the office to work with Nancy on this.
Spiritual Life Retreat:
Sallie Jenkins said she is leaning toward Fred Macon at Lake Junaluska who would speak on
Celtic Christianity. There was some dissent since Ron Robinson had spoken previously on this
subject. Sallie will check to see if he has other programs.
Membership:
Mary and Bill Roper — “the bottom line is programs, that is what draws people”. We need to ask people, especially in Sunday school classes. After a discussion, it was decided that a flyer would be sent to Sunday school classes, someone in the class would give information on the meeting and ask that members call the reservation line. There has been a problem with sheets not making it around in classes, people signing up more than once, etc.
Historian:
Don Redding asked that we give suggestions to him. He is doing an excellent job with pictures.
Barbara Barden said that the next meeting would be in the new facility. The meal will be catered.
There being no ftirther business, the meeting was adjourned
