Class Objectives:

The Objectives of the Ownbey Sunday School Class are to expand Christian beliefs through learning and discussion  and to provide Christian fellowship.

B)     News: :

1)      Lessons:

·   Ace Walker teaches  9/14 and 9/21,  as we continue Jesus against Christianity. We move to the International Series  for two sessions with Paul Guthery (9/28) and Barbara Barden (10/05)

2)      Social:

·   50th Celebration : Chair Jim Hatfield reports email and class surveys support Jubilee Hall on a Friday night.  Other suggestions are to invite retired ministers, previous members,  prospective members. Also, try to find some oldie pictures of class, come prepared to sing some 50’s songs, etc. Continue to let Jim have your ideas. We are pleased that our own Sydnor Thompson will be our main speaker. Time tentative at 6:30. Mark your calendars for 11/07. (Note Change)

·   Signup  and pay by 9/21 for the 9/26 B B Q at the Copelands. $12 cash or check payable to  Carol Douglas soon. 33  signed  so far and most have paid!

3)      Most Valuable Member NameTags were given to Jane Pixley, Gary Grogan, and Madelyn Standford. The question was raised again about the qualifications for receiving the Most Valuable Nametags. As Don reported August 17, the name tags go to “outstanding class members.” According to the survey, all Ownbey members are OUTSTANDING.

4)      Oooops in an earlier Reader I should have said the Maxwells   were given their Most Valuable Member Nametags on 09/07. On 09/07 they celebrated their 46th Wedding. Anniversary.  (I goofed up and said it was the Chasons. Sorry.)

5)      Elkins celebrated 56th anniversary on 9/06! Congratulations. Wow, I say they married at a minus 6 years old.

6)      Soules celebrated 60th anniversary 09/20! Wow, I say they married at a minus 10 years old.

  1. Margaret Ann Schrum received her Most Valuable Member name tag on 09/07. Lois Wilson and Paul Guthery received their Most Valuable Member name tags 9/07.
  2. Health and Happiness: Dottie Tobias continues to improve, and was good to see her at 9/14. She received her Most Valuable Member Nametag 9/14. Allen Maxwell shared with us that he will have an operation for a cancer growth on 9/25.  We keep these folks in our thoughts and prayers.
  3. Town Meetings – Church Talks with the Ministers -Too late if you wanted to go. (See previous Reader for update on one session.)
  1. Class Talks:  On the heels of Dr Howell’s Church Talks, Ownbey will have Class Talks before and after SS class beginning 9/21/03 and continuing for a few Sundays. No attendance requirements! If no one shows, that is ok. From 9:10  and from 10:43 . No agenda, rather it is your agenda and could include the training sessions, church talk, MPUMC policies, Ownbey, curriculum, etc. Sunday not everyone was  interested in  the happenings at the Training Session, but we  needed more time for those interested to talk about it (I have summarized in the Readers  our response and some of what happened, but that is not a dialog). The question of people on the role who do not attend SS class is one that  often comes up and subjects such as that can be discussed. Your call. I will be there. if you want to chat.

15)  Birthdays: Durward Owen (08/30), Nancy Hatfield, 09/02, Anne Buker 9/07, William Webb 09/07, Ellen Chason 09/08, Dorothy Bridgeman 09/09, Linda Webb 09/11, Joyce Witherington 09/18, Heathy Walker 09/18, Evelyn Clark 09/27, Frank Gossett 09/28.

16)  Adults Plus!

¨        superprogram Wednesday 9/17. That preacher’s wife can really sing.

¨       Plans a trip to the Barter Theater in Virginia December 3 and 4 Details soon.

¨       Maybe a day trip to Sanford to hear Stephen Ware in Rainmaker.

17)   Exercise:  Your thighs are  very important muscles as we  get older. Need  strong for many reasons. Walking does not make us stronger -  maintains, lubricates. Sign up for new classes at MPUMC. $4/$5 a class

18)  Computer: The Shepherd Center has some great Computer  classes taught at SouthMinster.

19)  Habitat:(09/14) Willard Gourley reported a good start  with over 400 cars parked. He reminded us of the need for workers and especially traffic directors.

20)  Training Session for Sunday School  9/13/03, Thanks to the big  five at the session including Bill Pearce, Ginny and Wes Soule, and Reatha Andrew.

¨       See  9/14 Reader for update.

¨       New class time for finishing lesson is 10:35

¨       No SS classes are to be cancelled, only combined. On Labor day weekend Barbara took 2 visitors to 5 classes and all  canceled. Therefore new guidelines born. I told Barbara should have tried Ownbey, we had 38.

21)  September Birthdays: Durward Owen (08/30), Nancy Hatfield, 09/02, Anne Buker 9/08, William Webb 09/07, Ellen Chason 09/08, Dorothy Bridgeman 09/09, Linda Webb 09/11, Joyce Witherington 09/18, Heathy Walker 09/18, Evelyn Clark 09/27, Frank Gossett 09/28.

22)  Class Membership Requirements were discussed  9/14.

¨       Don felt our goal is to be a welcoming Christian Community. Any one who wants to be a member of the Ownbey Sunday School Class may be. Members remain on the roll– even if they seldom (or never) attend - unless they say they want to be removed. Annually and often several times a year, data sheets are sent to and received from all  members confirming their data information and desire to remain on the roster. Some members who do not attend stay current with the class through emails, postal mail, and the class web page. Some send Ownbey checks. At times members who have not attended recently return as their life situation changes.

¨        A class member suggested  having many members on the roll who did not attend hurts our percentage of attendance ratio and affects the allocation of space. Don indicated he did not think that was the case, but -  remembering being wrong about opening  the windows on Hot Sunday - will doublecheck with Barbara.

¨       In recent years there has been no Ownbey Sunday School Class Membership Committee. Individual members  performed this function.

23)  Helping Hands:  (09/21/03)

¨       (09/21/03) The class has agreed to purchase extra BBQ for the party Friday night (using Health and Happiness Project Funds) to use Saturday for lunch for the Habitat workers.Skip said  the Hatfileds and  Soules are signed up for helping arrange and serve lunch Saturday, September 27. Janie Jones and the the Halperns will help ith providing snacks.  On October 11 we help provide hospitality stations for our youth Champion Builders and six members have signed up so far. Skip encouraged more to sign to help us cover all 10 stations with two persons each.

¨        (09/07) Skip Heintzelman lead a discussion of a proposal for several possible Helping Hands projects. The full text of the  proposal follows

Ownbey Helping Hands Service Opportunities

1  Hospitality Stations - Champion Builders Weekend

On Saturday October 11 our youth group in association with the Southside church will make needed repairs and improvements at the residences of 8 to 10 selected church members. We would set up hospitality stations at all, or many of these work sites. We Mould provide two people per location, a card table, a cooler, water, sodas and a selection of snacks. Also be prepared to run errands, if necessary. The time frame is probably from 9:30 AM until 2:30

2. Snacks and Lunch for Habitat Building Team

On Saturday September 27, we would provide snacks and lunch to 15 members of our Habitat building team. The snack would include donuts, fruit, water and Gatorade. The lunch would be sandwiches or chicken. chips or potato salad, fruit, desert, water and ice tea. We would also be responsible for napkins, cups, plates and forks and spoons.

3. Participate in both the Champion Builders Weekend and the Habitat Building activities.

In any of these opportunities, we will require money for food and person - power to serve at the sites. Are you willing to serve?.

·   The class voted to provide the morning snack and the lunch meal for our Habitat building team on Saturday September 27. It was agreed that we would make arrangements for additional BBQ from our Friday evening social for the lunch.

·   It also voted to ask for signups for helping provide hospitality station and snack help for our youth group in their Champion Builders Weekend 10/11 (9:30 – 2:30).

·   Skip emphasized these activities require money and  our presence
