C)    Membership suggestion for Handbook. The following was approved by voice vote with no objection on 10/05/03.

The Ownbey Sunday School Class is a welcoming Christian Community. Anyone who wants to be a member of the Ownbey Sunday School Class may be. Members remain on the roll – even if they seldom (or never) attend - unless they say they want to be removed.

A class member suggested a short way to express it is  Once a member, always a member, as long as you wish.”

D)    Class Description:  The following change was approved 10/05/03:

The Ownbey Sunday School is primarily a discussion class of singles and couples ages 40 and up. It designs its own curriculum of Bible study, applied theology, life management issues, and other topics. The teachers are experienced in leading discussions and knowledgeable in the subject matter.

From

F)      News: :

1)      Budget Issue:

¨       Last week (9/28/03) Several class members suggested the Ownbey Class make a contribution (in addition to any other individual gifts) to help cover the expected Operating deficit.

¨       Skip Heintzelman, Chair of the H H Committee, led a discussion of the suggestion. The class approved the following:

Þ     As support for covering the deficit and an encouragement to other Sunday School classes, the Ownbey Class will contribute $50 to the Operating fund of the Church in recognition of its 50th anniversary year and encourage class members to increase their pledge or give an additional amount. Such gifts may be designative as part of the Ownbey effort.

Þ     Wayne Harris, Business Manager, said any increased pledges or gifts may be marked Ownbey to reflect our class effort.

Þ     A rough approximation of the  support of the Ownbey Class so far is $1,800

2)      Lessons:

·   We moved to the International Series for two sessions with Barbara Barden (10/05) and Paul Guthery (9/28).  Thanks to both for good lessons.

·   On 10/12 Jim Walters talks to us about our Sanctuary and its Symbolism. If you have the 25 Anniversary 32 page booklet, the 117 page 50th Anniversary yellow book from 1975 (“A Narrative Compilation of News  ... of  ...MPUMC, ” or Rev. Gilreath Adams book on the Sanctuary(“Artifacts in the Sanctuary of MPUMC”), please look over and bring. The last two  are on line at http://donredding.com/sanctuary.html

·   Then 10/19 Chick Thompson starts a two class session on Speak What We Feel followed by Ace Walker on 10/26.

3)      Helping Hands

4)      (

5)      Exercise Classes – will ask for feedback about an exercise class for the over 55 folks to be held Tuesdays and Thursdays. No cost for the first session and then it is either $4 or $5. Fill out survey 10/12 and return

6)      Ushers Needed. See Jerry Brady.

7)      Adults Plus! Spiritual Life Retreat at Lake Junaluska was a big hit.

¨       Thanks to Steve James for a meaningful session as he discussed with us the changing nature of the church population and challenged us to extend and explain our Christian Heritage to new members and others. Thanks to Barbara for her organization (and for the party).

¨       Trying to remember who went from Ownbey as we had 14 of the 38 participants, here goes: Durward and Connie say their first trip to Junaluska was wonderful. Ben and Joyce, Wes and Ginny, Ken and Anne, Ruth and Skip, Marilea and Bob, Joe, Don

¨       See Pictures at http://donredding.com/pi.htm  By the way, the picture of a participant sleeping was not of an Ownbey member – and it was not during class!

8)      Name Tag Day was last Sunday : Might do again or regularly, not sure yet.

9)      Nametags 2 – We need Nametags for our 50th celebration for members, former members, and guests. It might be a good time to consider permanent name tags for Ownbey for the future. Preference from members seems to be for the ones with elastic strings around the neck. Thanks to Bob Lumadue who did the last nametags which now have become yellowed and many missing. Not sure who did the wooden Nametag Holder but it was during Betty Hindsman’s presidency.

10)   50th Celebration:  is Friday, November 07, at 6:30 p.m.

¨       The class voted 10/05 to have the meal catered for the 50th Anniversary at a cost of $8. This was in lieu of a covered dish meal. Former members will be invited to join us (at the $8), but special guests will not be charged. Let Don and the Hatfields have addresses of previous members to invite.

¨       A signup sheet was passed and over 40 people signed up already..

·   Planning continues; let Social Chair Jim Hatfield have your ideas.  Sydnor Thompson will be our main speaker.

·    Suggestion we pay for Sanctuary flowers on the Sunday before the celebration; cost is $125, and we are looking for contributions to do this.

6)      Thanks to our hosts Ann and Jack Copeland for sharing their home with us for our BBQ 9/26/03. Good food, fellowship, and des

7)      Health and Happiness:

¨       Good to see in class 10/05 some folks who have been under the weather recently  including  Marie Perce, Randy Harris, Dottie Tobias,

¨       The Hatfield’s daughter, Amy, had a son Monday, September 22 and both doing well. Congratulations. See some neat pictures at http://homepage.mac.com/marcandamy/PhotoAlbum2.html

¨       Alan Maxwell is home and recovering nicely from the removal of his gall bladder.

¨       Bun Collingwood is feeling worse lately and we should keep him in our prayers.

¨       Virginia Gourley is feeling stronger, thanks to a blood transfusion following a bout with anemia, and she was in Church today.

¨       It was good to see Ruth Heintzelman at the BBQ Friday, class Sunday, and at Lake J. She is feeling better though tests still not conclusive.

¨       Bill and Marie Pearce were missing 09/21 (and missed the BBQ and Lake Junaluska trip) but  Marie is getting better

¨       Winnie Culbreth’s mother, Alma Warren died recently.

¨       Good to see the Witherington’s  back from their Wilmington summer visit. Good to see Laura too.

¨       Please provide Reatha with other H and H

6)      Mission Response Center Help - Thanks to Joe Hamrick and Len Chason for helping load a truck at our conference's Mission Response Center in Mooresville 9/27 with flood buckets and health kits.

7)      Habitat:

¨       (09/21) First Saturday of Blitz was 9/20 with several Ownbey folks helping including Willard, Jim Hatfield; Joe Hamrick, Durward Owen. (Let Don know the others).

8)      Class Membership

¨       Reatha and Don attended the New Member Orientation Monday night, September 22. Next is in November. Need Volunteers.

¨       Requirements were discussed 9/14.

¨       Don felt our goal is to be a welcoming Christian Community and that any one who wants to be a member of the Ownbey Sunday School Class may be. Members remain on the roll– even if they seldom (or never) attend - unless they say they want to be removed.

Þ     Annually and often several times a year, data sheets are sent to and received from all members confirming their data information and desire to remain on the roster.

Þ     Some members who do not attend stay current with the class through emails, postal mail, and the class web page.

Þ     Some send Ownbey checks.

Þ     At times members who have not attended recently return as their life situation changes.

Þ     In discussions with Barbara about a membership policy and whether there should be some activity or financial requirements, she mentioned the Women’s group which had had activity requirements and even “dues” which, she felt, contributed to its decline in membership.

¨       A class member suggested having many members on the roll who did not attend hurts our percentage of attendance ratio and affects the allocation of space. Don indicated he did not think that was the case, but - remembering being wrong about opening the windows on Hot Sunday - will doublecheck with Barbara.

¨       In recent years there has been no Ownbey Sunday School Class Membership Committee or Chair. Individual members performed this function.

9)      Habitat: - (09/21) First Saturday of Blitz was 9/20 with several Ownbey folks helping including Willard, Jim Hatfield; Joe Hamrick, Durward Owen. (Let Don know the others).

10)  Helping Hands:

¨       As a reminder, Helping Hands is the Committee / function of the Ownbey Class whose purpose as approved 08/03/03 is  to identify and/or investigate service opportunities that could warrant financial or time participation of the class.” The chaiir of Ownbey Helping Hands is Skip Heinzelman and the members are Ellen Chason, Judy Stinson, Willard Gourley, and Don Hammer. The ex-officio members are the Class Treasurer and president.

¨       See #1 action above on the Budget issue.

¨       The class fed the Habitat workers 9/27 lunch with extra BBQ from the  9/26 party (using H and H's Project Funds)  We planned for 15 and  25 people were working and  the Hatfields and Soules were seen buying bread and supplies at the last moment and making sandwiches as noon approached. Janie Jones and the Halperns helped with providing snacks; ask them about the reaction differences in Presbyterians and Methodists!

¨       On 10/05 Skip Heinztleman again  asked for voulunteers for tOctober 11 when we help provide hospitality stations for our youth Champion Builders.  ___ members have signed up so far. Skip encouraged more to sign to help us cover all 10 stations with two persons each. The Grogans already brought some treats to be used then.
